BY RANDY BYERS – HOUSTON5ABASEBALL.COM
Down to their last out and trailing 6-2 in the National Championship game of the NYBC in Memphis, TN, the Houston Banditos Baseball Club 12U Black eyed a crack in the door of San Diego and emphatically kicked it in over the next 1.3 innings.
That crack was in the form of a two-out error by San Diego allowing Daniel Cabrera to reach base safely and the shocking rally was on. The Banditos Dylan Bhnert followed Cabrera with a single, Landon Miner then stepped up and blasted a three run home run, (his 2nd HR on the day w/5RBI) to bring the Banditos within one run at 6-5. Matthew Mitchell would follow Miner with a solo shot to tie the game at six.
Hayden Evans would dispatch San Diego in the bottom of the 6th 1-2-3 setting up the Banditos explosion in the top of the 7th where they would plate seven runs striking a paralyzing blow to San Diego who seemingly could do nothing to stop the onslaught.
The Banditos Dillon McCarver would draw a five-pitch walk followed by a Charles Branum one-out single. Vincent Secrest would then drive another one-out single that would produce an errant throw from the San Diego defense plating both McCarver on the single, & Branum on the throw, giving the Banditos an 8-6 lead. Daniel Cabrera would then double in Vincent Secrest giving the Banditos a 9-6 advantage. After a pick-off of Cabrera, Dylan Bhnert would draw a two-out walk and swipe second; Landon Miner would be hit by a pitch; and Matthew Mitchell would smack a three-run home run making the score 12-6. Shane Daughety would then single and Dillon McCarver would double him home to give the Banditos a 13-6 lead heading to the bottom of the final inning.
Hayden Evans would have to stave off some control issues facing five San Diego Batters but he was able to coax a ground ball to second from San Diego’s Nick Allen to slam the door and win the Banditos first ever NYBC Championship.
Prior to Sunday’s action, the Houston Banditos Baseball Club possessed every significant State (104) and National (51) Championships there were in the select baseball world save one, the NYBC National Championship. The NYBC is a National Championship comprised of winners from AABC, AAU, Babe Ruth, Dixie, NABF, PONY, Super Series, and USSSA national finalists.
